FAQ about Carrier Oils

 Carrier Oils 101

Carrier oils are a vital part of skin care. Here's a short overview:

  1. What's the definition and purpose of a carrier oil?

Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils and facilitate absorption into the skin. They are used in perfumes, massage oils, wound care, and more.

  2. What are a few carrier oils?

Jojoba, coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, avocado oil.

  3. When is one carrier oil a better use than another?

If you need a lightweight oil, something like sweet almond oil is a recommended choice. But if you're allergic to tree nuts, you should avoid almond oil and use jojoba. Jojoba is great for the facial skin, whereas castor oil is great for lip balm for its shine.

  4. Are some carrier oils better than others for skin type?

Yes.  Almond oil or apricot kernel oil is best for dry skin while grapeseed oil or jojoba oil is preferred for oily skin. The one oil that spans all skin types is almond oil.

  5. What are carrier oils made of?

Carrier oils are generally made from nuts or seeds.

  6. Where can learn more about carrier oils?

Honestly, everything you want to know about carrier oils is packed in the Herb & EO Superbundle

  7. I want a simple skin oil recipe to use before I put on my makeup. I have oily skin. Any ideas?

The first resource mentioned below offers a "Luxe Facial Oil" recipe using a combination of effective carrier oils and essential oils based on skin type. (Definitely check it out!)

Here's a very simple version based on that, which you can create in minutes.

Facial Oil for Oily Skin

Using a 50 mL or larger dark bottle, pour in 2 ounces of jojoba oil. Then add 15 drops of lavender (or a combination of lavender and geranium to equal 15 drops). Gently shake to blend. Massage a few drops into facial skin and allow to rest for 2 minutes before applying makeup.
