Because our Second Life Hair Butter is such a hit with our curly hair community, I sought the expertise of one expert who has been working specifically with curly hair for YEARS.

In a nutshell, here are Scott’s recommendations:
Steps to create curly hair you can’t help but embrace.

Start with a mentality change. “Curly hair doesn’t need to be fixed. It needs to be embraced,” says Scott. Your hair has been cut with tools and methods made for straight hair, and you’ve been using products that have created the frizz. What if you your hair didn’t frizz or have a triangle shape? Would you wear it curly?

Stop towel drying your hair (use a t-shirt instead), and put away the flat iron and brush forever.

Make sure the cleansers you use on your hair are: water soluble, silicone-free and sulfate-free. (You’re used to calling them shampoos, but Scott calls them cleansers.) Sulfates explode your hair and it becomes frizzy. If you doing the no ‘poo method, read this first.

Rub your scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Swap out your cotton pillowcase with a satin pillowcase.

Have your hair cut by someone using the “Curl by Curl” technique. He or she should be taking a clump of curl (grouping formation) and cut more on the loose curls and less on the tighter curls. Scott talks about this in more detail in the interview.
Every now and then I get a question about our Second Life hair butter.
Here’s one: “I have very coarse, hair and frizzy underneath the top layer. I colored it naturally with henna and love it! I’m always looking for products/remedies for the frizzy stuff! Would your product help?”
Is it as simple as a product fix? While I worked the product with certain hair types in mind, I felt that just like with dry skin and eczema, there’s likely a deeper issue at hand that could possibly be fixed with a change in the way we cut, style, or work on our hair. I asked my newsletter list what type of hair issues they had, and over 500 people responded.

I called on Scott Musgrave, who has spent the past 30 years professionally and experientially learning everything he could about curly and wavy hair. I came armed with my questions and he graciously answered them.
Who is Scott Musgrave? Scott has been cutting hair professionally since 1986, he has implemented the CURLYS method of training for stylists working specifically with curly hair, and he created Curly Hair Artistry, a place where Curly Hair Stylists are trained to learn all things possible with hair that’s curly, wavy, coily and/or multi-cultural.

A great conditioner but I have to be very careful to put only a tiny amount on my hair. None of this scooping of the butter from the tin as recommended. The butter is very sticky going on and as long as I don't use a lot -- just "wet" my fingers slightly with the butter -- dries to a soft feel on my hair and styles my hair really nicely. Best of all, no itching like regular conditioners.
Second Life Hair Butter is just the bomb. Great control for frizzies, yet doesn't leave your hair greasy. Perfect product, that's why I have been using it for several years.
Myself and both my daughters love this cream! I use it on my dry scalp, especially along my hair line and part before a shower, then after shampooing I add it to my palms and rub it onto my ends and any tangled areas. I allow the heat of the shower to melt it into my hair and then brush through. Not only does it do an amazing job for tangled hair it also keeps frizz away for days longer than any other conditioner or leave in treatment!
My daughter with oily wavy hair only uses it on her ends and flyaways but it is SO helpful for her. We both love the amazing smell and shine it gives our hair! Plus when we are done or have extra we just rub it into our hands or legs, as the ingredients double as an amazing lotion!!

I purchased this for my neighbors toddler and it was a hit! Tamed the frizz and left a nice shine for several days with no greasy feeling. Will be ordering again.
I was a little afraid of using this on fine hair, but it worked great to smooth the ends and keep fly-aways in control. Love it!
My daughter has naturally curly/wavy hair. I've tried so many different curly products and this is, by far, the best. It calms the super curly parts and invigorates the wavy parts so her hair texture is smooth, has a more even curl pattern, and is so super soft!! Never greasy, and a little goes a long way! Love it!
I’ve tried all kinds of gels, etc but had not found one that I liked well enough to repurchase….now I have. It really does take just a small amount.
This is my go-to travel or purse balm. It smoothed hair works as a face or hand lotion, or lip balm in a pinch. Smells great too! Love it.
After 60 years of living, I finally tried a shampoo bar. I don't know how this one compares to others, but this one works great -- quick and easy lather and rinse. Bonus: I lose less than half as much hair with this bar than with the pricey liquid shampoo and conditioner I was using.
I love the shampoo bar. I normally purchase a brand from my beauty salon but have switched to the shampoo bar. Gets my hair squeaky clean and shiny. I no longer need to use conditioner.
Just sad I didnt get a bigger bar. This shampoo bar is works wonders on my hair. Also smells wonderful.
I love your products but regarding the shampoo bar it lathered well but stripped some coloring from my hair. It I ever let my hair go grey, I'll be able to use it!
The shampoo lathers so easily and I only need a little bit to wash my hair. Feels clean but not drying for my hair!
I like that my hair is squeaky clean. Rinses out really well. I will buy again. And recommend for anyone. I know it says curly but I think too often we have had a build up from commercial products.
It took a couple of weeks of saying I wasn’t sure about this, but I tried several times and when things clicked, they really clicked. I love this bar, hate that each time I try to get more it’s sold out. And that gets old. So, in frustration I ordered someone else’s product. It is different enough that my hair is getting used to it, but the bar is disappearing fast. There’s no way this will last at the rate it’s disappearing. So, I came to order more and, It’s SOLD OUT. I’m about three weeks into this shampoo bar and am enjoying it very much! I have fine, aging/thining hair. First one or two uses was unsure but after that works great!
Before I began using this shampoo bar, I honestly had lost hope that anything could help my fine, thinning hair feel anything close to normal ever again. Until now that is.
