I am no hair expert by any means but I do get questions from our community and when I do, I go seek out answers.
Because our Second Life Hair Butter is such a hit with our curly hair community, I sought the expertise of one expert who has been working specifically with curly hair for YEARS.
Hair Guru Scott Musgrave answers your curly hair questions.
(Scroll down to listen to my interview with Scott.)
In a nutshell, here are Scott’s recommendations:
Steps to create curly hair you can’t help but embrace.
-
Start with a mentality change. “Curly hair doesn’t need to be fixed. It needs to be embraced,” says Scott. Your hair has been cut with tools and methods made for straight hair, and you’ve been using products that have created the frizz. What if you your hair didn’t frizz or have a triangle shape? Would you wear it curly?
-
Stop towel drying your hair (use a t-shirt instead), and put away the flat iron and brush forever.
-
Make sure the cleansers you use on your hair are: water soluble, silicone-free and sulfate-free. (You’re used to calling them shampoos, but Scott calls them cleansers.) Sulfates explode your hair and it becomes frizzy. If you doing the no ‘poo method, read this first.
-
Rub your scalp to stimulate hair growth.
-
Swap out your cotton pillowcase with a satin pillowcase.
-
Have your hair cut by someone using the “Curl by Curl” technique. He or she should be taking a clump of curl (grouping formation) and cut more on the loose curls and less on the tighter curls. Scott talks about this in more detail in the interview.
Every now and then I get a question about our Second Life hair butter.
Here’s one: “I have very coarse, hair and frizzy underneath the top layer. I colored it naturally with henna and love it! I’m always looking for products/remedies for the frizzy stuff! Would your product help?”
Is it as simple as a product fix? While I worked the product with certain hair types in mind, I felt that just like with dry skin and eczema, there’s likely a deeper issue at hand that could possibly be fixed with a change in the way we cut, style, or work on our hair. I asked my newsletter list what type of hair issues they had, and over 500 people responded.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS RELATED TO HAIR CARE:
-
frizz (will it ever go away?)
-
products and their ingredients (what’s safe, what’s not)
-
flat irons, brushes, relaxers and chemical treatments (should I or shouldn’t I?)
-
unevenly curly hair
-
hair breakage
-
hair loss
-
no-poo method: how can I get it to work for me?
I needed a professional.
I called on Scott Musgrave, who has spent the past 30 years professionally and experientially learning everything he could about curly and wavy hair. I came armed with my questions and he graciously answered them.
Who is Scott Musgrave? Scott has been cutting hair professionally since 1986, he has implemented the CURLYS method of training for stylists working specifically with curly hair, and he created Curly Hair Artistry, a place where Curly Hair Stylists are trained to learn all things possible with hair that’s curly, wavy, coily and/or multi-cultural.
The interview lasted almost an hour, but I summarized hi main points above.
It’s worth a listen, however, to get Scott’s full message.

Hair Product Reviews
I’ve tried all kinds of gels, etc but had not found one that I liked well enough to repurchase….now I have. It really does take just a small amount.
This is my go-to travel or purse balm. It smoothed hair works as a face or hand lotion, or lip balm in a pinch. Smells great too! Love it.
This is the only product I have found that will keep my flyaways contained. I have slightly wavy hair and have always had a corona of frizz. I got this and started putting in on after washing my hair, and between washdays as needed.
My appreciation for all things MadeOn increases with continued use, especially if I temporarily have to use something else. Years ago, long before the pandemic, ;D I had a favorite hair product that was strong enough to hold the sides of my hair up in a tight bun without shedding like dandruff throughout the day. It was like gorilla glue for hair and worked well in heated, humid conditions. Then, I decided to give Second Life Hair Butter a try. It could “glue” my hair up into my tight bun, but afterwards I noticed that my hair wasn’t stiff, brittle or dry like with the “other product” I’d been using. I could use a lot less product, too. It was gentler on my “vintage” hair, but strong enough to tame the increasingly uninhibited, wiry silver tinsel appearing in my dark hair. Then…it ran out. Not my silver tinsel, my Second Life Hair Butter was out of stock, in my own cupboard and at MadeOn! While I waited for MadeOn to contact me when it was back in stock, I went back to my old hair product to use in this emergency. My love for it was not the same! Since our previous experience, I had discovered better, I wanted better, I needed better. Better is Second Life Hair Butter. I’m usually a very frugal person, but when my Second Life Hair Butter arrived, without a second thought I carelessly tossed my almost-full old stand-by in the trash. I deserved better, and now, I had better, Second Life Hair Butter. YAY! :D
I have curly hair. This stuff works great on it.
Have not used this product yet. I have fine hair and it might weigh it down.
On a trip to Italy last year I took shampoo from my stylist and also the bar shampoo from Made On. I was really worried about the bottles leaking so had them in a plastic bag. What I discovered was the bar soap made my hair stay cleaner longer and it was soft and fluffy. Who doesn't want that?? Going on another pilgrimage this fall and definitely taking the bar soap and Second Life Hair Butter!! Don't tell my hairdresser ;)
It is the only thing I have found to keep the frizz on my curly hair down. I am a repeat customer and very happy with it.
It’s a bit heavy for my hair but I do use it as a deep conditioner and rub it in my hair the night before I wash it.
That said - I love to use it as a hand and face lotion at night. I’m a sucker for citrus - I’m addicted to the scent!
The shampoo bar is easy to use and leaves the hair clean and shiny as well as fluffy which I like. My hair is gray and earlobe length. I tried it without conditioner the first time and had a problem with static when dry. I had to keep spraying my hair with water after brushing or combing, so it would lay down. I liked the feel of it and It was easy to comb, but was hoping I would not need to use conditioner. The next time I used a small amount of my usual conditioner, and it was better, but still need to be wetted down periodically. It is winter here, so I will have to wait until summer to find out if the humidity helps.
Barbara,
I would try apple cider vinegar every now and then after washing with the shampoo bar. It's an easy way to condition your hair and the smell of vinegar will go away quickly. Works like a charm!
Renee
I am very impressed with the shampoo bar. Lathers well and my hair feels so clean. My husband is allergic to quite a number of ingredients and he is able to use this (as well as the goat milk soap) with no issues. I love the that there are so few ingredients (all of which I can pronounce)!)
This shampoo bar is very soft and really bubbly. Makes scalp feel silky.
Love, love, love this shampoo bar! Smells great and really cleans my hair and scalp!
10/10 stars! Can like this enough!!! Easy to use and take with me on trips. Love the way it makes my hair feel!
Having used a similar natural , minimal ingredient list, oil-based shampoo for my hair for the last decade, I wasn't feeling the need to try the Shampoo Bar. The concept sounded...well, a little weird. But, in an attempt to get over the free shipping threshold, I decided I'd finally try it. AND I'M SO GLAD I DID! It is simple enough to use and it left my hair feeling so soft and nourished. I have fairly curly hair and the Shampoo Bar is doing something great to my curls...I seem to barely need any product in my hair lately! Amazing! I am convinced...and I'm hooked :)
I currently use a shampoo bar from another company and love it. I wanted to try this one as I do like your products and wanted to switch. It really dried my hair out to where I thought it had been damaged. I have very fine hair so I think that is the reason. I’m using the bar now as a hand soap to see if it helps with very dry winter skin. It seems to help!
I have dandruff problem for many years, I used shampoo bar from Renee about 3 months, it clears up dandruff, my hair now clean and not itching anymore. Happy with the product!
I had been trying out different shampoo bars in the search on one that didn’t leave my fine hair flat and droopy and didn’t dry my scalp out. Received a sample of the Rhassoul Clay bar and gave it a good testing out. I LOVE this shampoo bar…smells clean and not perfumy, does not make my scalp itchy and dry and leaves my hair full of body! This was an out of the blue surprise and I have since obtained the full size bar. So it’s a win-win for me, good hair and good for the environment too!
The BeeSilk Lotion bar has been one of the best products I have purchased in a long time. We have hard water and as a result it takes a toll on my skin. This is the first lotion I have used that has taken care of very dry skin and actually has stopped the deep peeling from such dry skin. I highly recommend this product.
Love the natural ingredients, but it really is challenging to use due to how it pulls my skin as I rub it on.
There may have been an issue with one batch having too much beeswax. We're shipping you a new bar to compare.
I am very disappointed. I liked the small size, and that's why I ordered a regular size, however, this large one is very dry and hard to apply to my hands. While the small one is smooth and easy to apply, the regular size, no matter how long and hard I rub my hands on the lotion, never gets on to my skin. I don't know if this item is defective or not, but I'm getting tired of using it.
I'm going to look into this for you. We'll ship you a new bar.
I live in a dry climate and have used the lotion bar with great success for years. When I use consistently before bed, my hands are always smooth by morning. It also helps small cuts to heal faster. Great for traveling without worrying about carrying liquid lotion. I recently had a minor issue with one order and Renee was very quick to help me out. Very thankful for this product and company!
i expected it to be a larger size … i also just don’t like it. waste of money.
I use the bars to reduce my liquids when I travel. And to get the benefit of the ingredients. Like this bar, but like better the scented bars--sort of like aroma therapy.
I was pleasantly surprised with how soft this made my skin feel. Even the next day my hands still were very soft.
This lotion bar is so great, I even use it on my face and neck when I am particularly dry. It goes on feeling waxy and soon just soaks in. I love it. I have recommended it to all my friends
I love the basil bars they are awesome. I keep my feet in my hands from cracking. I would definitely recommend it.
I don’t usually write reviews but I love this hard lotion. I had a double mastectomy last October and the skin adjacent to my scars stays dry and itchy. This product is moisturizing and has helped quite a bit.
Thanks for your product
Love the subtle scent and ease of application.
Wasn’t sure if I’d like this as much as the lotion bar; but I do! I typically use it on my feet and cuticles as it’s a little easier to apply.
I absolutely love love Bee Silk Junior. My skin is so dry and Bee Silk Junior soothes the itch and makes my skin soft. I use it every day—I really like the feel of Bee Silk—it’s like a body butter. It ‘s a wonderful product because it’s all natural.
Easy to use, I should of purchased two! My skin is responding nicely & the rash at my ankle is mostly gone. Love it!
I love this product! It makes my
skin so soft and I even use it on my face as a moisturizer.
The BEST moisturizing product on the market! I love to put this on my kids right after bath time!
Lotion I must have after bath. I use it all year round. Love it!
I tried it, looking for something softer than the regular bar. It doesn’t seem to moisturize as well and leaves more of a greasy residue.
